The Varsity Boys Basketball team went on the road Tuesday, January 22 to take on the first place Region 6-AAAAA Jackson Trojans. Needing to rebound from a disappointing loss the previous night where victory was in hand until late, the Raiders responded in a big way to come away with a 57-51 win. The victory gives the Raiders an 8-3 region record, moving them into a second place tie in the region, with only three regular season region contests remaining.
Playing in a gym that has not been kind to the Raiders for some time, the team jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and led 9-4 going into the 2nd quarter. Hot shooting opened a more comfortable 29-18 advantage at the half and the Raiders looked to be well on their way to knocking off the defending region champs. An error-prone third quarter; however, saw the margin shrink to one point. Clinging to a 33-32 lead heading into the final period, the Raiders refused to buckle. Calling upon their experience in tough games to make key buckets, they managed to get some big stops and, when the final buzzer rang, the Raiders claimed a satisfying 57-51 win.
Senior Davis Herndon led all scorers with 20 points, 13 of those coming in the 4th quarter. Jared Nalls, Cody Kaplan, and Nathan Henderson each pumped in nine points.
The Raiders return home on Friday night, January 25 for another critical region match-up. The Grady Knights, having found their rhythm in the final stretch, come to Sandy Springs looking to avenge their earlier season loss to the Raiders. In December, the Knights lost to the visiting Raiders 67-50. Friday's contest tips at 7:30pm
